How to Build a Cheap Patio Floor (Without Going Broke)

Finished DIY gravel patio floor with budget friendly outdoor seating

So here’s the thing nobody tells you about patios.

I spent about two weeks browsing Pinterest before I started mine. Big mistake. Every single photo was some gorgeous flagstone masterpiece that probably cost more than my car. I almost gave up. Almost convinced myself I needed to save up a few grand and hire a professional.

Then my neighbor, Dave, did his own patio in a weekend for like a hundred and fifty bucks. And honestly? His looked better than half the expensive ones I’d been drooling over.

That kind of changed everything for me.

The truth is, you really don’t need concrete trucks or a contractor or any of that. If you can dig a hole and rake some rocks, you can figure out how to build a cheap patio floor yourself. It’s messy, your back will probably hurt the next morning, but it’s totally doable. Trust me. I’m not exactly a handyman and I pulled it off.

Let me walk you through how I did mine.

First, Pick Your Material (This Part Matters)

Okay so before you touch a shovel, you gotta decide what you’re actually laying down. Get this wrong and you’ll regret it later.

Here’s what your cheap options basically are:

Pea gravel. This is what I went with. Cheap, drains water like crazy, and very forgiving if you mess up the leveling. You can literally just rake it around until it looks right. Love the stuff.

Mulch or wood chips. Cheapest option upfront, sure. But it rots. My uncle did mulch and now he’s out there every single spring topping it up. No thanks.

Basic concrete pavers. Those plain gray squares at the hardware store, usually under two bucks each. Good if you want a hard, flat surface for heavy furniture. More work to level though.

Free wooden pallets. If you can hunt down clean, heat-treated ones for free, you can build a little wood deck floor. Looks amazing. But finding good pallets is a whole project on its own.

I’m going to focus on pea gravel here because, well, that’s what I know and that’s what’s easiest for a DIY project.

Let’s Talk Money

I always get annoyed when guides say “budget friendly” and then never show actual numbers. So here’s roughly what I spent on a 10 by 10 area:

  • Pea gravel in bulk — around $70
  • Heavy landscape fabric — $20
  • Some 4×4 timber for the border — $30
  • Leveling sand — $25

That came out to about $145. Give or take.

Quick tip though, and this one’s important: do NOT buy gravel in bags. I almost did. Then I called a local landscape yard and they quoted me half the price for the same amount, dumped right in my driveway. Bags are a total rip-off for this kind of work.

The Actual Build

Alright. Roll up your sleeves.

Step one — mark it out

Find a flat-ish spot that doesn’t turn into a swamp when it rains. Stick four stakes in the corners and run some string between them.

Here’s a trick Dave taught me: measure diagonally, corner to corner, both ways. If both measurements match, your shape is square. If they don’t, adjust your stakes. Took me three tries to get it right, but whatever.

Step two — start digging

This is the part that sucks. You need to dig down about 3 to 4 inches. Pull out all the grass and dirt.

Don’t skip the depth. I got lazy on one section and didn’t dig deep enough, and now that corner sits weirdly high. Drives me nuts every time I look at it.

Once you’ve cleared it out, tamp the dirt down hard. I just used the back of a sledgehammer because I didn’t want to rent a tamper. Worked fine.

Step three — lay the fabric

Please do not skip this. I’m begging you.

If you put gravel straight on dirt, weeds will punch right through in a few weeks and your stones will slowly sink into the mud. Lay heavy landscape fabric across the whole thing, overlap the edges by like 6 inches, and pin it with those metal staples.

Step four — build a border

Gravel doesn’t stay put. It just doesn’t. Without a border it’ll creep into your lawn and you’ll be picking rocks out of your mower forever.

I used pressure-treated 4x4s along the edges and hammered rebar spikes through them into the ground. If you’ve got old bricks or big rocks lying around, those work too. Just bury them halfway.

Step five — sand base

Dump about an inch of leveling sand over the fabric. Rake it flat, spray it with the hose a little, then pack it down. This gives you a nice cushion so your final gravel stays level.

Step six — the fun part

Finally. Pour your gravel on and rake it out to about 2 inches deep. Walk on it, rake it again, fix the low spots. Keep going until it feels solid and flat under your feet.

This is the satisfying part. After all that digging, watching it actually become a patio feels great.

Making It Look Good (For Cheap)

So now you’ve got a floor. Cool. But a bare gravel square is kind of boring. Here’s how I dressed mine up without spending much:

  • String lights. Seriously, this is the cheapest upgrade with the biggest impact. I strung some warm bulbs across the back and suddenly it looked like a little café.
  • Pallet couch. Stacked a few free pallets, sanded them, threw some cushions on. Boom, custom seating.
  • Potted plants. A few pots with bright flowers around the edges and it instantly felt cozier.

Oh, and one more thing. If you want it to look really natural, plant a wildflower border around the edge. It’s cheap and it softens the whole gravel look. I actually did this and it made a huge difference. If you’re curious, check out our guide on how to start a prairie garden at home — that’s basically what I planted around mine.

Mistakes I Made (So You Don’t Have To)

  • Skipped the border on one side at first. Big mistake. Gravel everywhere. Had to redo it.
  • Bought a couple bags of gravel before I knew about the landscape yard. Wasted money.
  • Didn’t dig deep enough in one spot. Now it’s uneven and it bugs me daily.

Learn from my dumb mistakes, basically.

A Few Common Questions

What’s the cheapest patio floor?
Mulch is cheapest upfront, but it rots. Pea gravel is the best value long-term in my opinion.

Can I just dump gravel on the grass?
Nope. The grass dies, rots, sinks, and you end up with a bumpy muddy mess. Dig it out first.

How do I stop my chairs from sinking?
Keep the gravel thin, no more than 2 inches over a packed sand base. Too much gravel and your furniture sinks like quicksand.

Final Thoughts

Look, you don’t need a fortune or fancy skills for this. I’m living proof. My patio isn’t perfect — that one high corner still annoys me — but I built it myself in a weekend for under $150, and I use it almost every evening.

Once you actually understand how to build a cheap patio floor, you’ll wonder why you ever thought it was complicated. So grab a shovel, find a spot, and just start. You’ll figure it out as you go. That’s what I did.
